So... What will you need with you?

To get the best results for you and your canine companion, we use tools to help our dogs understand what we're asking them to do. Remember: this equipment is a tool for you! Regardless of what you choose to work your dog on, we will work with you to achieve the highest standard of training possible.

This page outlines the most important things you will need with you, for more, see the FAQ page .

Pay attention to this... it's important...

A non-extendable rope or nylon lead.

As useful as extendable leads may seem, allowing your dog to run off energy without you having to replicate Usain Bolt's training scheme, these leads offer minimal control over your dog and are NOT suitable for you to work with. Chain leads are also popular, however due to their harsh material its often physically painful to appropriately work your dog on this type of lead.

We highly recommend using leads made of soft materials such as rope or nylon, as this allows you maximum control over your dog to communicate your needs with them as effectively as possible.

A suitable collar, headcollar or harness

At HGDogs, we encourage our members to work their dogs on either collars or headcollars rather than harnesses as they offer much more control over your dog especially if you have issues with your dog pulling on the lead as a harness makes it easier and more comfortable for your dog to continue the pulling behaviour. We DO NOT allow any types of pronged or shock collars or similar and we will not be able to assist you if you insist on using these types of collars, we will, however, be more than enthusiastic to assist you in making the transition to another tool.

Poo bags and treats

This one if probably fairly self explanatory, if your dog needs to do their business, you need to clean it up, just as you would need to anywhere else. And treats are of course to reward your pup for all their hard work!

Your Dog's vaccination records

In order to keep all the dogs in our community safe and healthy, it is imperative for you to present your dog's vaccination records so that we can ensure that the risk of spreading dangerous pathogens between our pups is completely minimised. This will need to be presented again, every time your dog gets their vaccinations updated so that our records stay up to date.
